Why Your Shoe Size Is Not Enough to Tell Us Whether a Shoe Will Fit

Fit education

Your shoe size is the length of a last, not a description of your foot. It says nothing reliable about your girth, your instep, or the difference between your two feet. So we ask for your foot length, ball girth, and a foot tracing, start from the standard last nearest your size, and adjust it where your foot falls outside it.

A shoe size is a label for a last, the form a shoe is built around. The last is longer than your foot by a toe allowance that changes with the style and the maker, so the number describes the shoe more than the foot. Each half size adds about 4.2 mm of length, and US, UK, and EU sizes don't line up exactly. A size is a useful starting point. It is not a measurement of you.

Length is only one dimension

Two people can have the same heel-to-toe length and need very different shoes. One has a broad forefoot and a narrow heel. Another has a high instep. Heel-to-ball length matters too: it decides whether the ball of your foot sits where the shoe is built to bend. When it doesn't, the shoe creases in the wrong place and feels awkward even though the length is right.

That is why a shoe can feel tight even when the length is correct, or loose even when the number printed inside is the size you normally wear.

Width letters are helpful, but still simplified

D, E, EE, and the other width letters are steps in ball girth, the distance around the widest part of your foot. Each step is about 6 mm of girth, and brands don't agree on where each letter starts. Men's and women's scales differ too: a men's D is standard, while a women's D is wide. So we don't ask for a letter. You measure your ball girth directly and trace your foot, because girth alone can't show whether the extra volume sits across the ball or through the toes. Why a wide size still fails some wide feet has its own guide.

Most people have some left-to-right difference

A few millimeters of difference is often absorbed by the leather and the lacing. When the difference is larger, one size forces one foot to compromise. If you tell us your feet differ, you measure each one, and each shoe is built to its own foot. Our guide to having one foot bigger than the other explains how.

Why we still ask you to choose a size first

Your normal size still matters. It picks the standard last we start from. Your measurements then decide where that last is adjusted, wherever your foot falls outside it in length, girth, or shape. Measure in the evening, standing with your weight even, in the socks you'll wear with the shoes. Feet spread under load and swell through the day, so a morning measurement runs small.

Made-to-fit does not mean throwing sizing away. It means using sizing together with better information.

If standard shoes are always almost right

If your usual size is right in length but presses across the ball, the problem is girth, not size. Going up a size mostly adds length.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is my normal shoe size enough to order made-to-fit leather shoes?

You can order with your size alone. Then the pair is made in the size you selected, and the fit depends on how well that size suits your foot. If you send your foot length, ball girth, and a tracing, the last is adjusted to your measurements, which is why we encourage measuring.

Why do shoes in my usual size sometimes feel too tight?

Usually the length is fine and the girth or shape isn't. A broad forefoot, high instep, or fuller midfoot can make a shoe tight at the right length. Makers' lasts also differ in toe room and girth at the same size, so your size in one brand can fit differently in another.

If I know I wear a wide size, do you still need more fit details?

Yes. A width letter is a step of ball girth, and brands don't set those steps the same way. Measuring your ball girth directly and tracing your foot tells us more than any letter.

What happens if one of my feet is bigger than the other?

Choose Different on the measurement form and measure each foot. Each shoe is then built to its own foot, so you don't have to size both up to fit the bigger one.

Does made-to-fit mean you ignore standard shoe sizing completely?

No. Your usual size picks the standard last we start from. Your measurements decide where that last is adjusted.

What information do you use before making my shoes?

Your foot length, ball girth, and a foot tracing, for each foot if your feet differ, plus your heel height and sole choice. Measure in the evening, standing, in the socks you'll wear with the shoes. A fit specialist reviews every submission before production.

Are Rebels Market shoes pulled from stock or made after I order?

They are made after you order. You choose the shoe, boot, or jacket, then send your measurements or keep the size you ordered. A specialist partner workshop then makes it in 10 business days.
